Guys. Guys. Listen. I had the greatest smoothie for breakfast- spinach, parsley, almond milk and strawberry. And ginger.
It ended up being a glass of green pulp with red streaks, like some heartless beast had tossed Kermit into a blender. It tasted like pure deliciousness, however. Creamy, sweet, with a mild tang of green at the end- not like pureed frog in any way, shape or form. Which is for the best, really.
the amazing thing was that I actually had a body high after I drank it. Seriously. It was euphoria in a glass, and I'm contemplating another one...
*eyes blender lustfully*
...anyway. I digress.
This was the magic drink of magicness that Johnny made for me.
2 cups spinach
1 cup parsley
1 cup almond milk
6 strawberries
1 ping pong ball of ginger
Savoury smoothies are a new thing for me and I must say, I am a fan. Time to sacrifice a few carrots to the Juicer Gods, I think. One of my favourites is carrot/pear/ginger, but I'm loving the piles of green goodness in a glass. I will have to buy more kale today and do one with spinach, parsley, kale and maybe a scoop of avocado, or some celery...maybe some apples...

Day 04: Mix and Match.
Somehow last night we managed to fall asleep ridiculously early. Like, 10:00. Being all warm and cuddling is a dangerous business in the winter, I tell you. However, because I had an accidental 10 hours of sleep, I have been very energetic and active and productive today. I weighed myself this morning and I was at 170.8. That's 4 lbs lost this week with no effort on my behalf, even while having my period. Crazy stuff!
The down side of being so industrious today means I lost count of how many times today I washed a blender, dehydrator, magic bullet (tm!) or food processor. OK, granted, the second time I washed a blender was because I had to make my face scrub. Not food related. But still. Phew.
having said *that*, WOW!! So much good food was had today.
Breakfast was a smoothie of watermelon, orange, strawberry and fresh ginger and 20 almonds. Because if I scarf down my almonds too fast I get a stomach ache sometimes, I nibbled them slowly while doing some sewing prep. Voila! No tummy ache. Victory is mine; and, more importantly, almonds! Nom.
I was super full until lunch when I had the leftovers of that basil/parsley/mango/yellow pepper/broccoli salad I made yesterday. It was *way* piquant yesterday, but marinating overnight in it's lemon juice/ACV dressing really worked out! In retrospect I may have been rather intemperate in my use of spicy red pepper. Oh, who am I kidding. Spice is life. I can't believe that I ate 4 cups of dense salad that quickly. Wow, that was good. I'm glad no one was around to watch me eat that- It got a little messy, as all proper food is wont to do. Then I had a banana. Mmmm, bananas.
HOWEVER- WE MADE KALE CHIPS.
Sorry, I shout when I get excited. We had some amazing fake sour-cream-chive kale chips yesterday and Johnny asked me if I could make something like them. Always up for a challenge, I hit up the internet and Lo! AKale Recipe Appeared On High. You should make these. Yes, YOU. You can make them in your oven, but I used my trusty Nesco American Harvest dehydrator (who comes up with these names??). Follow the recipe exactly and you will not be disappointed. Unlike regular chips, eating a giant bag of them only results in nutrition and happy tummies.
So I may or may not have eaten what felt like quite a lot of kale chips this afternoon. NO REGRETS.
Then we went grocery shopping to make amazing raw Indian food for dinner. We made fancy schmancy mushroom curry. which took less time I think than it takes me to make a fancy schmancy cooked curry with trimmings the regular way- the usual amount of chopping, then 2 1/2 hours in the dehydrator. The sauce was a simple puree that I let steep while the veggies were dehydrating, and the parsnips were also a simple puree- and as a bonus, you can mix some of the parsnips with a little almond milk, dehydrated coconut and raw cocoa for an amazing pudding. Yes, parsnip pudding. Don't laugh.
Both of us have the belief that, when following a recipe, the first time you should do it exactly, see how it tastes, and then tweak it from there. The Great Curry Experience of Ought-Thirteen was delicious, but the vegetables were tossed in 2 tablespoons of olive oil (mixed with curry, and lemon juice and whatnot, but still) and I think next time we could definitely cut that down or out completely. Granted, the amount of vegetables we used made two enormous meals for us tonight, with enough leftovers for two enormous lunches tomorrow- but I am still insanely full for someone who's eaten about 1200 calories of food today. Raw curry is really good- in cooked curry, of course, all the different veggie flavours mix together, but in the raw, you can really taste the tiny diced veggie flavour niblets. It was a fun eating experience.
Here's my food diary for today! snacks!
Unfff. Time to go for a walk. So. Full.

A Traveller In A Distant Land.
Doing a food experiment on your body is like travelling.
Your wake up; your routine is disrupted- the regular, comfortable go-tos of your daily life aren't present. No tea or coffee in the morning, or the smell of toast or oatmeal. Instead, the whirr of the juicer and blender and the heady smell of fresh oranges, watermelon, pears and strawberries.
Everything is novel and exotic. Food aisles rarely travelled are stalked, list in hand, like the lesser trod roads of a distant city. In part because of it's newness, the change of routine is exciting and fun. Some people aren't meant to travel, don't enjoy the occasional discomforts or inconveniences that this exploration brings as part of it's very nature. It's easy to miss a favourite meal, or a regular haunt where your drink of choice is known by the bartender in advance.
after all, comfort is...comfortable.
But if you've chosen to take the leap, buy the ticket and land in Parts Unknown-well, then. You'll be back home soon enough, but for now; time to go exploring.
Personally, what I miss is curry. I'm pretty good at cooking Indian food and in the cold weather, I'd be lying if I wouldn't like a huge bowl of lentil and cauliflower curry...
and because my boyfriend is psychic, when I woke up today, he suggested we make this. and this.
gourmet raw food being what it is, I suspect we'll be eating it tomorrow (or having a midnight feast!) but for now, grocery list in hand, and dehydrator at the ready, I can't wait to go adventuring.
And for now, pass the bananas.

Day 03: Flaxing my raw muscles.
Despite having the Awful Headache of Awful Awfulness yesterday evening, and getting an hour or so less sleep than I normally do, I woke up feeling amazing. Once again I wasn't at all hungry until I'd been awake for an hour or so, and the smoothie filled the gap perfectly. This was around 8:45.
Johnny made us amazing breakfast smoothies (orange, apple and strawberry!) and because I was working early, I took my 20 almonds, some strawberries and a huge pear to work for my mid morning snack, which happened around 11.
Once again I am amazed at how filling 20 tiny almonds can be. I was completely full for three+ hours after finishing my snack, and had a later-than-usual lunch of a banana, an apple, a big handful of cherry tomatoes (the rest of the pint from Wednesday) and the last of the Suspicious Cookies from yesterday.
Live, a local resto here in Toronto usually makes amazing raw vegan food. I've eaten there and been very happy with everything I've tried, but the extremely expensive Live brand raw cookies we had yesterday were annoyingly (Suspiciously!) bland and waaaay high in fat (one cookie is 12% of the average helping of fats!) Which of course, completely throws off the 80/10/10 ratio unless you cram a whole ton more fruit and veggies into your tummy. We won't be buying them again, although if you're in the neighbourhood you should definitely eat at the restaurant itself. Super yum.
The Suspicious Cookie made me uncomfortably full and a little bloated feeling for a couple hours after I ate it but by the time I had run up to the Chinese grocery store by my work to score an enormous pile of fruit and veggies, hit up the health food store and was heading home, I was legitimately hungry again.
Did I mention I found some Flax Crisps?
I found some Flax Crisps.
OK, found is probably wrong. Went to my local health food store (next to the Chinese market) and purchased them with coin of the realm is more accurate. Holy Moly, they are good!!
These puppies are also not cheap but worth every crispy, well rounded, flavourful bite. Which you can have a lot of, since one large cracker (2x6inches or so) is only 50 calories and 1.5g of fat. I *may* have eaten more than one. Maybe more than two and three quarters. O Happy Day!
Dinner has been another smoothie (banana, pear, ginger, strawberry and two oranges.) As soon as I'm done typing, I'm going to get some kale chips started for weekend snacking-fun-times. I will also be having an enormous salad of mixed greens, parsley, mango slices, broccoli and yellow peppers with a lime dressing.
overall, today I feel really good. My energy dipped a little mid afternoon, I think I should have eschewed Suspicious Cookie and just had two more bananas- this is what I get for giving things a second chance, darn my generous nature. I have not had the shadow of a headache and my mood is good.
EDITED:
oh- and I forgot to mention, I weighed myself this morning, I was 171.8.
Here's my food diary for today! OM NOM I managed to hit up 73/19/8. still too much damned fat, out out damned cookie!!

Day 2.2: So. Much. Food.
Today was totally easy, right up until I got that terrible headache. But I digress.
Once again, I wasn't hungry when I woke up; it usually takes me a few hours to get my digestive system on line so I wasn't too fussed but it seems to me that if I drastically (accidentally) under ate yesterday, then I should have been hungrier sooner. What do you think? I'm not sure.
Breakfast, when I felt like having it (around 10:30) was a pint of deliciousness in the form of a smoothie made from a banana, strawberries, an orange and fresh ginger. Oh, and a pear. So good.
I really wanted some protein almost right away so around noon I had my morning snack which was an ounce of almonds which completely did the trick. It did so much of the trick that I wasn't super hungry again for a while, although I forced myself to eat lunch which was a salad, and a banana, and some coconut water.
It's very strange eating when I'm not super hungry, just to maintain bare calories.
By the time I finished my later afternoon snacks (carrots, broccoli and the rest of that cauliflower dip) I had only reached 1200 calories, and I had a terrible headache.
It started around 4:30ish, a slight tightening around my temples and my neck got very stiff. I was pretty concerned it was going to be a migraine...it was headed that way. The last few hours at work were Not Fun.
I managed to grit my teeth, not kill anyone on the way home and I had a painkiller and some kale chips (delicious!) and a mediocre raw cookie (which was definitely not worth the 12 grams of fat). Headache dissolved.
and DINNER, which was very exciting! Johnny made us a couple of awesome green smoothies; spinach, parsley, ginger, banana, orange and strawberry. and THEN- zucchini noodle pasta with cashew alfredo sauce topped with sundried tomatoes. Amazing.
I ate more, calorie-wise, than I usually would but apparently it's the thing that one is supposed to do on this diet, so we'll see how it goes. It's really counter-intuitive to be eating when I'm not hungry, and to eat more than I would normally want to when I am hungry (volume-wise, that is). We'll see what the numbers shake down to in a few weeks. I also felt quite full and bloated most of the afternoon, which was less than fun but surely due to the sheer increase in food volume.
Here's what I ate today! I managed 73% carb, 9% protein and 18% fat. I blame the cookie.

Day 02.1 -Letting Sleeping Vegans Lie.
So, before I was going to do some chores last night, I sat down on the bed to blog. And apparently, sleep the night away. I woke up once around 2 to let the dog out and again around, I think, 6. A fairly broken but very, very long sleep.
So, I was planning on eating more yesterday but the Nap Fairies clubbed me in the back of the head, the buggers. Despite eating until I was stuffed at dinner, and snacking a lot during the day, I ate less than 1200 calories. Clearly this is not enough and will put my body into starvation mode- and is likely the reason I passed out early, too. (although work was crazy busy and, as previously noted, wild wolverines were gnawing my unterus).
Today will see the advent of not one but TWO! (2)! green smoothies. and double the bananas.
I am a BANANA!
So let it be written, so let it be done.
I weighed myself this morning and was down to 172.8 from 174. I forgot to check my body fat on the scale thinger, but I will tomorrow. No surprise considering the amount of sleep I got, but I am crazy alert and rested this morning, only mildly congested, and oddly enough not hungry yet, although that often happens after I take my morning B12 sublingual supplement.

Wherein Our Heroine Wants a Cup of Tea but One Is Not Forthcoming.
I will assume that it is in part the large meal (veggie roti, sweet potato frites and a couple of amazing stouts) that we had last night that accounts for my complete lack of appetite this morning. To complicate matters, and I'm (not particularly) sorry if this is TMI, but the new year saw fit to gift me first thing in the morning of the 1st with the worst period I've had in quite a while. So, this will probably skew things for this first week as I de-tox and have PMS at the same time. Look out, world! *cue carnival music*
It was damned cold when I walked Circe and all I wanted was a cup of tea when we got home. Instead, I had a hot shower. I foresee a lot more hot showers this month. A lot. Weighing myself this morning, I was 174 lbs. This is a considerable gain this year (10+lbs) and while I know it's not really surprising, considering that I haven't been able to ride in 2 months, and I *am* a Boozethusiast, it's still running counter to my self-image. I will be working out more (I already started up again in December) and hoping to gain some healthy muscle mass and shed that heavy, tired poisoned feeling.
Breakfast was a scant mixed cup of strawberries and blueberries while I hurriedly checked my email- no matter how early I get up, I always seem to run out of time. Who knows. I think morning gnomes steal it.
Cleverly hitting up the local greengrocer before getting to work, I managed to forage for baby carrots, a couple of apples and bananas. Sadly, I had to choices of banana- Extreme Green (tm) and Dubious Brown. Opting for brown, the nice man at the cash register gave me them for free! Score- up two elderly bananas. I am a queen and I feast on my bounty.
Mid morning snack was a banana and an apple and some carrots.
Lunch was a tetrapak of coconut water, most of a pint of cherry tomatoes, some baby carrots and another banana.
I had to pee. A LOT. I didn't drink any more water than usual. It would be impossible for me to drink less, as Water is Gross and I avoid it at all costs. I drink fancy mineral water to trick my body. This was pretty tricky when working retail but I managed.
Somehow I don't have a caffeine withdrawal headache- yet. We shall see tomorrow.
My amazing guy made me a super great smoothie when I got home- orange/banana/strawberry. I literally inhaled it.
Dinner was a totally made up dip, consisting of two red peppers and about 2 cups of cauliflower, pureed and augmented with a bit of lemon juice, raw garlic and some herbs. Turned out pretty good, and we ate it with cucumber, celery and carrot sticks. I'm contemplating a dill something-something this week. Mmmm, dill.
Today saw a fairly constant snacking; as a result, I didn't have a food sugar trough that I usually get around lunch (although tea was still noticeably absent.) but I had no idea how long it genuinely took to masticate my way through a cup and a bit of carrot sticks. To be fair, it was super busy at work too- it took me the better part of an hour just to eat an apple.
at no time was I dying of hunger and knowing that I could literally stuff my face with the fruit and veggies I had with me was oddly freeing. I kept my nutrient-dense foods to the afternoon and evening, traditionally times when I get hungrier and need some large snacks and a big dinner.
It's probably psychosomatic, but I noticed that I am less congested in the sinus region than I normally am; cold weather really does a number me and I get permanent sniffles. Probably due to this my sense of smell seemed way jacked up; I was noticing how everything smelled a lot more than I normally do. Which isn't always a good thing, when what I am smelling is bus stop.
Here's a link to what I ate today. According to my chart I managed to achieve 73% carb, 19% fat and 8% protein. The fat is higher than it should be, but not bad for my first shot out the gate. It is solely due to the second oz. of almonds I had to eat- otherwise my calories would have been dangerously low. (i.e, less than 1000) I think next time I will make a banana heavy smoothie instead to increase calories only. I will also note that my iron was a little low- tomorrow will be a greens heavy day to make up for it.
we're also going to make the hell outta some kale chips.
